21 セレブ御用達、バレンシアガ♪

1895年1月21日は、セレブ御用達のファッションデザイナー、バレンシアガの生まれた日♪

クリストバル・バレンシアガ・エイサギーレは、スペイン・バスク地方の漁村ゲタリアに生まれた。母親は裁縫師で、彼は12歳から見習いとなり、ティーンエイジャーで早くもトーレス伯爵夫人を顧客とした。非凡な才能を見抜いた伯爵夫人は、バレンシアガをマドリードに送り正式に洋裁師として修業させた。

1919年にブティックを開店、スペイン王室と王侯貴族を中心に、世界中のセレブがこぞって顧客となり、バレンシアガのブランドは高い名声を得た。ジョン・F・ケネディも妻のジャクリーンと連れだってバレンシアガの服を購入していた。

メゾン経営の傍らでファションデザインの授業を受け持ち、教え子にはオスカル・デ・ラ・レンタ、アンドレ・クレージュ、エマヌエル・ウンガロ、ミラ・ショーン、ユベール・ド・ジヴァンシーなどがいる。

1960年、スペイン出身のファビオラ・デ・モラ・イ・アラゴンが、ベルギー国王ボードゥアン1世と結婚した際には、バレンシアガがウェディングドレスを制作した。

後日、このノーブルなドレスはバレンシアガ財団に寄贈された♪

2011年6月7日、スペイン王妃ソフィアによって出身地のゲタリアにバレンシアガ博物館が開館、デザイン1,200点以上が展示された。その一部はジヴァンシーのような弟子や、ベルギー王妃ファビオラ・デ・モラ・イ・アラゴン、モナコ大公妃グレース・ケリーなどの顧客からの寄贈による♪

Cristóbal Balenciaga Eizaguirre (January 21, 1895 in Spain – March 23, 1972 in Spain) was a Spanish Basque fashion designer and the founder of the Balenciaga fashion house. He had a reputation as a couturier of uncompromising standards and was referred to as "the master of us all" by Christian Dior and as "the only couturier in the truest sense of the word" by Coco Chanel, who continued "The others are simply fashion designers". He continues to be revered as the supreme deity of the European salons. On the day of his death, in 1972, Women's Wear Daily ran the headline "The king is dead" (no one in the fashion world had any doubt as to whom it referred).

Since 2011 the purpose built Museo Balenciaga exhibits examples of his work in his birth town Getaria. Many of the 1200 pieces in the collection were supplied by his pupil Hubert de Givenchy and clients such as Grace Kelly.
