19 「クリスマスキャロル」初版♪

1843年12月19日に、文豪ディケンズの「クリスマス・キャロル」が出版された♪

守銭奴のスクルージがクリスマスイヴに超自然的な体験をし、改心する。大人気のクリスマス・ストーリーで、ディケンズを世界的に有名にした記念碑的な作品といえる♪

チャールズ・ジョン・ハファム・ディケンズは、少年期は病弱であり、病床で主に読書をしていた。家は貧しく、ディケンズが学校教育を受けたのは、2度の転校による4年のみだった。1824年に生家が破産。ディケンズは12歳で、靴墨工場へ働きに出された。かなりつらい体験をしたという。

記者を目指し、20歳前後から仕事の声が掛かるようになり報道記者となる。仕事の片手間に書いたエッセイが出版され、優れた批評眼が注目を浴びた。その後、長編小説「オリバー・ツイスト」等発表し人気を博した。そしてその後、ディケンズの人気は終生衰えることがなかった♪

墓碑銘は 「故人は貧しき者、苦しめる者、そして虐げられた者への共感者であった。その死により、世界から、英国の最も偉大な作家の一人が失われた 」となっている。

A Christmas Carol is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in London by Chapman & Hall on 19 December 1843. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim. A Christmas Carol tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation into a gentler, kindlier man after visitations by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come.
