1812年5月12日 は、ナンセンス詩人で画家のリアの生まれた日♪

エドワード・リアはロンドン郊外で、株式仲買人の父の20番目の子供として生まれた♪　年の離れた姉に育てられたが、15歳のときに父親が破産したため、絵を学ぶために徒弟奉公に出た。

19歳のときに写生画をまとめた「オウム図譜」を出版する。彼は終世このような写実的な画家として活動した。ヴィクトリア女王に絵の手ほどきをしたこともある♪

リアの鳥類図はダービー伯の目に留まり、ダービー伯の私設動物園で動物画を描くことになった♪　1832〜36年の滞在中、彼は動物画の傍らダービー伯の孫たちに滑稽な絵を描いたりその絵におかしな詩をつけたりして楽しませた♪　1846年にこれらをまとめた「ナンセンスの絵本」を出版、以後も画家として活動する傍らナンセンスの詩画集を執筆した。

彼はまた「ランシブル（Runcible）」と呼ばれる造語を作った。この言葉自体は意味を持たない言葉だがその後、さまざまな作家によって形容詞、キャラクター名、地名などとして使われるようになったという♪

Edward Lear (12 May 1812 – 29 January 1888) was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, and is known now mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks, a form he popularised. His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold: as a draughtsman employed to illustrate birds and animals; making coloured drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; as a (minor) illustrator of Alfred Tennyson's poems. As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense collections of poems, songs, short stories, botanical drawings, recipes, and alphabets. He also composed and published twelve musical settings of Tennyson's poetry.
