トマス・ゲインズバラは、ロンドン北東のサフォーク地方にあるサドベリに生まれた。ゲインズバラ家の家業は羊毛を扱う職人だった。13歳の頃に父親に素描の才能を見いだされ、1740年にロンドンに出て学ぶようになる♪

ゲインズバラは生涯に700点以上の肖像画を残しているが、故郷サフォークの風景や自然をこよなく愛し、彼が真に描きたかったのは風景であり、「肖像画は金のために、風景画は楽しみのために描く」と言っていたという（笑

しかし、あまり特徴のない風景画より、「金のために」いやいや描いていた肖像画に多くの傑作があり、流麗なタッチ、人格を偲ばせる表現力など、他の追随を許さない非凡な作品となっている♪

Thomas Gainsborough FRSA (14 May 1727, died 2 August 1788) was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. He surpassed his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds to become the dominant British portraitist of the second half of the 18th century. He painted quickly, and the works of his maturity are characterised by a light palette and easy strokes. He preferred landscapes to portraits, and is credited (with Richard Wilson) as the originator of the 18th-century British landscape school. Gainsborough was a founding member of the Royal Academy.
